Kořínková, Jana ; Bartlová, Milena (referee) ; Hrůša, Petr (referee) ; Chamonikolasová, Kaliopi (advisor)
With special attention being paid to the development in the city of Brno, the dissertation focuses on the issue of applying artworks in Czechoslovak architecture after World War II. The main research questions – Why were in Czechoslovakia after 1945 artworks again integrated in architecture and what strategies were applied in the case of the newly built housing estates in the city of Brno? – are answered in two successive sections. First, the institutional background for application of art in architecture in the light of the events in Brno (1945–1993) is examined; the closing part is devoted to three case studies that illustrate local development in the period of socialist realism, creative release of the1960s and political normalization. The aim is to highlight the complexity of the examined subject and refute a popularly handed down conviction that integration of artworks into architecture in the period of socialism was motivated exclusively by the communist propaganda, and to show that the attempts to create a synthesis of art and architecture were also based both on earlier theoretical considerations about the educational function of art and its effect on humans and the need to improve poor economic situation of artists after World War II.

The first theoretical part of the thesis deals with the definition of basic concepts and the history of Czech housing estates. Then it focuses on private and public spaces in housing estates and on the typology of public spaces in housing estates. In the practical part, the bachelor thesis deals with six housing estates, three foreign and three from the Czech Republic, each time a pair of housing estates from the Czech Republic and from abroad from the same time period is selected, these housing estates are then analysed. The housing estates’ regeneration in accordance with the interests of the heritage care
Řepková, Hana
This methodical guide is based on a synthesis of three approaches to the revitalization of panel housing – urbanist, heritage and architectural. The guide aims to contribute to increasing the lifespan of panel housing while maintaining the estates‘ key values for their residents. It provides suggestions on how best to cultivate the housing estates‘ environment and to positively influence their status within the commonly held image of inhabited landscapes as an effective part of sustainable development of the structure of settlements in the Czech Republic. The guide strives to effectuate change in societal opinion by showcasing panel housing’s domestic history, embodied values and potential for development within the international context. Aside from foreign experiences, it focuses on an original and proven domestic method of facade appearance regulation. Adherence to basic regulations for the foundation and continuous upkeep of traditional urban structures helps panel housing to become a regular part of said structures. The guide encourages searching, appreciation and protection of outstanding and original solutions. The recognition of the specifics of Czech housing estates, which the guide identifies, is to serve as a starting point for their universal acceptance and eventual heritage care.

Economic Valuation of Housing Estate Transformation
Chudý, Ondřej
Housing estate areas usually have around a 70% share of public space. A considerable amount of money is spent on the maintenance of these non-building areas. When maintenance efforts decrease, technical and visual aspects of the living environment also decrease. This paper presents a survey conducted in the Modřany housing estate in Prague evaluating current non-building areas and proposing three examples of model transformations. The costs used in the survey were taken from the Catalogue of Interventions in Housing Estates. Benefits presented in the survey are taken from a questionnaire determining residents’ preferences. The goal is to find the correct valuation of the money spent on development and management of public areas of housing estates and show it can bring great benefits for residents.
Long-term development of age structure of housing estates residents: comparison of Prague and Ostrava
Červenka, Jakub ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Nina (referee)
Panel houses in socialist housing estates belong among dominant forms of housing in Czechia. Mainly young families with children were moving into new housing estates right after their construction was completed, but the following development of residents' composition wasn't the same in all housing estates. Significant social changes after the Velvet Revolution contributed greatly to the differentiation of housing estates' development. This paper aims to describe overall changes of housing estates in Prague and Ostrava between 1970 and 2011 in terms of age structure, to find differences between both cities and to identify main trajectories of housing estates' development. Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis as well as more advanced analytical methods represented by location quotients and sequence analysis. The results show that population of housing estates was very young at the beginning, but has aged significantly in the following decades. Housing estates in Ostrava have always been younger than the ones in Prague, however, they are gradually equalizing. Large number of housing estates has had tendency to stabilize their age structure in the same form as the structure of the whole city. Key words: housing estates, age structure, demographic ageing, Prague, Ostrava
Development of Prague's Housing Estates: Ageing and Functional Use
Worschová, Markéta ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Machala, Branislav (referee)
There lives currently one third of population in the post-socialist housing estates in the Czech Republic. Because of many problems that accompany the estates, many scientific studies deal with the topic. In my study, I focus on analysis of the age structure changes in Prague housing estates and investigate whether it corresponds to the level of the functional use. The analytical part is divided into two sections. The first one is the analysis of the age structure based on the statistical data. The second section is an assessment of the level of the use in Prague housing estates through a questionnaire survey in a selected estate. In principle, it was confirmed that the Prague housing estates really have been aging and this trend affects to some extent functional use of the locality. It is important to solve the needs of estates individually so that the changes were effective. Based on the analysis the conclusion is that the Prague housing estates have good prospects for the future. Key words: Prague; housing estates; ageing; functional use

Jahelková, Kateřina ; Najbert, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Pinkas, Jaroslav (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the didactic use of the topic of panel housing estates in the teaching of history by applying historical thinking methodology. The first part is theoretical and deals with the historical development of housing construction in Czechoslovakia within a global context. The second part elaborates the methodological basis for the preparation of teaching material utilizing the curricular documents and presents examples of didactic use of this topic in historical education. Furthermore, possible starting points for using the topic of panel housing estates to develop historical thinking are considered in more detail. The third part presents the preparation of a lesson, which was implemented in November 2021 at the Korunovační Primary School in Prague. The lesson created for the purpose of this thesis drew upon 'The Big Six Historical Thinking Concepts'. This diploma thesis proved the usability of the topic of panel housing estates in the teaching of history, but also pointed out the limits of the chosen method, especially the need for gradual development of concepts. The diploma thesis evaluates the current state of the physical environment of the housing estates in Česká Lípa. It is focused on the process revitalization of the blocks of flats and public areas and clarifies the mechanisms of differentiation of individual housing estates from this point of view and the role of actors. The work combines quantitative and qualitative research methods. The theoretical part deals with the causes of revitalization and the factors that affect it, as well as the history of housing estates construction, especially in the Czech Republic and in major countries in Europe. The empirical part of the work is devoted to mapping the current state of the physical environment and the revitalization projects of housing estates at the level of individual prefabricated houses and public spaces. Relevant data that can have an effect on the revitalization process (history of construction of prefabricated housing estates in Česká Lípa, development and current state of ownership structure of houses, data on the structure of population and housing stock) are identified. The diploma thesis also uses information from the structured interviews with representatives of the main actors of development.
